SEO MCP servers compared: what each one gives your AI assistant

SEO MCP servers, compared: what each one gives your AI assistant, what it costs, and what it keeps.

An SEO MCP server connects an AI assistant such as Claude to real SEO data, so it can answer from numbers rather than guesses. There are three kinds. The big SEO suites run their own servers, which spend the API allowance on your subscription. DataForSEO’s passes your requests straight through and bills per call. And there are open-source ones you run yourself. Everything below was checked on 29 September 2026.

The main options

ServerWhat it isWhat it costsKeeps history?
SemrushSemrush’s hosted server: its SEO API, Trends, and read-only projects including position tracking and site audit.Included with some Semrush plans, spending API units: 50,000 included, more sold in packs.Your Semrush projects do.
AhrefsAhrefs’ hosted server on its API.Included on the Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise plans, within each plan’s API units.Ahrefs does.
SE RankingHosted, with over 180 tools, including AI visibility.Included in every subscription as API credits; the API alone starts at $50 for 250,000 credits.SE Ranking does.
DataForSEOFour general tools that can call any DataForSEO endpoint: results pages, keywords, backlinks, on-page and more.Pay as you go per request, with a $50 minimum payment.No. It passes requests through.
OpenSEOOpen source (MIT, about 21,600 GitHub stars) and self-hosted with your own DataForSEO key: rank tracking, keywords, competitors, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility.Free to run yourself. Hosted, $10 a month including $10 of usage, plus 28% on each DataForSEO call.Yes.
ReplaRankA self-hosted rank tracker with a 50-tool MCP server that runs on your own machine.$399 once, plus DataForSEO at cost: roughly 1.6¢ a rank check.Yes.

Which one fits

  • You already pay for Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking. Use its server. The data is already yours, and there’s nothing new to run.
  • You want raw data for one-off questions. DataForSEO’s server is the cheapest way in, but it keeps nothing, so every question is a fresh, paid call.
  • You want your own tracker, history and all, for nothing. OpenSEO. It’s open source, does more than ReplaRank in places (site audits, AI visibility), and asks only for a server and a DataForSEO key.
  • You want a narrower tool built around why a keyword moved. That’s what ReplaRank is for; more on it below.

A word on the free scrapers

The top Google result for “seo mcp” is a server that scrapes Ahrefs’ free tools and pays a service to solve the CAPTCHAs along the way. It hasn’t been updated since April 2025 and describes itself as being for educational purposes. We wouldn’t build anything on it.

What ReplaRank’s MCP server does

Its 50 tools cover the whole app: 11 for websites and rank tracking, 4 for reports and priorities, 5 for Search Console, 6 for keyword research, 5 for competitors, 10 for backlinks and link building, 3 for page problems, 2 for alerts and 4 for housekeeping. So you can ask things like:

  • “Why did this keyword drop?” It checks the page that ranks for a 404, a redirect chain, a noindex or a canonical pointing somewhere else.
  • “What should I push first?” You get keywords ordered by the visits a step up would bring, with real Search Console clicks beside the estimate.
  • “Which queries am I shown for but not tracking?” It reads your Search Console history, kept past Google’s 16 months.
  • “Who links to my competitors but not to me?” You get the link-building shortlist, with a risk score on each site.

ReplaRank is $399 once, and it runs on your own server. You bring your own DataForSEO key and pay them directly at their prices, and one fetch of a results page serves every site that asks for it. Its MCP server runs locally, so it works in Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor rather than as a web connector, and each key belongs to one brand.

Questions people ask

What is an SEO MCP server?

A small program that lets an AI assistant such as Claude call SEO data sources, like rankings, keywords, backlinks or Search Console, and answer from real numbers instead of guesses.

Is there a free SEO MCP server?

Yes. OpenSEO is open source and free to run yourself with your own DataForSEO key, and there are free Search Console servers. You still pay for any data you fetch from DataForSEO.

Does DataForSEO’s MCP server keep history?

No. It passes each request through to DataForSEO’s API and bills it per call. Keeping rankings over time needs something that stores them, like a rank tracker.

Can I use an SEO MCP server in a web app?

The hosted ones from Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and DataForSEO can be added as remote connectors in apps that support them. ReplaRank’s runs locally, in Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor.
