Claude for SEO: what it does well, and how to give it real data

Claude for SEO, on your own data: what it does well, where it guesses, and how to connect it to real numbers.

Claude is good at the parts of SEO that are reading and writing: working out what a page should cover, rewriting titles and descriptions, grouping keywords by intent, and turning a pile of numbers into a plain-English report. What it doesn’t have, out of the box, is your data. Ask it for a keyword’s search volume, or where you rank, and it has nothing real to go on, so treat any number it hasn’t been given as a guess.

The fix is to connect it to real data. This guide covers what Claude does well, where it guesses, and the two ways to give it real numbers: MCP servers and skills.

What Claude does well

  • Planning a page. Give it a keyword and the questions people ask around it, and it will outline what the page needs to answer.
  • Titles, descriptions and headings. Quick to draft and easy to check against a character count.
  • Grouping keywords. Sorting a long list by intent, so that one page targets one job.
  • Reading exports. Give it a Search Console or rank-tracking export and it will tell you what changed and what’s worth a look.
  • Client reports. Turning the numbers into a few paragraphs a client will actually read.

Where it guesses

Search volumes, rankings, backlinks and traffic are measurements, and Claude can’t measure anything on its own. Ask for them anyway and you may get a confident, plausible number with nothing behind it. An invented search volume reads exactly as sure as a real one, so if a figure matters, it should come from a tool that looked it up.

Giving it real data

MCP servers

An MCP server lets Claude call a data source while it works. For SEO the useful ones read Google Search Console, a suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, or DataForSEO’s raw data. Two guides here cover them: Google Search Console MCP servers and SEO MCP servers compared.

Skills

A skill is a packaged set of instructions that Claude Code follows for a particular job, such as a site audit or a weekly report. The most popular SEO one, claude-seo, has about 18,000 stars on GitHub. Skills tell Claude how to do the job; an MCP server gives it the numbers to do it with. They work best together.

Claude with ReplaRank

ReplaRank is a self-hosted rank tracker with a 50-tool MCP server, so Claude can work from your real rankings, Search Console history, competitors and backlinks. You can ask it things like:

  • “Why did this keyword drop this week?”
  • “Which page-two keywords are worth pushing first?”
  • “Which Search Console queries am I shown for but not tracking?”
  • “Who links to my competitors but not to me?”

It also comes with three Claude skills: a weekly client report, a link-building shortlist and a checklist for setting up a new website. The MCP server runs on your own machine, in Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor. ReplaRank is $399 once, and you pay DataForSEO directly for the data at their prices.

Questions people ask

Can Claude do SEO?

It can do the thinking and writing parts well: content plans, titles, descriptions, keyword grouping and reports. It can’t see search data on its own, so connect it to your rankings and Search Console before you trust it with numbers.

Which AI is best for SEO?

The one connected to real data. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all write well; what makes an answer trustworthy is whether it comes from your own rankings and Search Console rather than a guess.

Is SEO still worth it with AI?

People still search, and AI answers draw on pages that rank. What has changed is that thin pages are easier to make and easier to ignore, so pages that answer the question properly matter more than before.

How do I use Claude skills for SEO?

Add the skill to Claude Code’s skills folder, then ask for the job by name, such as a weekly report or a site audit. Skills work best alongside an MCP server that supplies real data.
